ECHO
“No one lights a lamp in order to hide it behind the door,
the purpose of light is to create more light, to open people’s eyes,
to reveal the marvels around”

An analysis of Hallstrom Park in Willoughby was conducted and various problems were defined. For instance, minimal foot traffic throughout the day, inadequate lighting along paths at night, and the parks overall desirability. ECHO aims to address these issues in an interactive and dynamic manner that will enhance and activate the public space with a self guided experience.
HOW DOES ECHO WORK? Fitted with LED lighting technology, ECHO responds with a colour changing exterior to the level of volume sensed within its structure. By enabling such interaction, users are able to engage with a new space that is controlled by their voices, whilst also being able to sit comfortably within its unusual parabolic freestanding ‘lantern’ structure. HOW DOES ECHO IMPROVE THE SPACE?
By providing a place for locals and visitors to converse in a new way, thus creating interest in the parks landscape. Also by immersing its light, particularly at night, into the surrounding environment. INSPIRATION Inspiration was drawn from Frei Otto’s exploration of bubbles, with particular focus on his temporary structure which was commissioned by Germany for the 1967 International and Universal Exposition in Montreal, Canada. Its light weight structure influenced the construction of the ECHO model in relation to establishing effective material options and design variations as well as its parabolic form. The Incinerator Cafe further influenced ECHO’s industrial aesthetics and geometric decorative forms. CONSTRUCTION To construct ECHO’s symmetrical frame, no custom shaped materials are required due to its parabolic structure, only straight cuts which are uniformly all the same length are needed. This is a cheaper alternative to the laborious process of producing a multitude of individual custom pieces. |
